Abstract This study examined the total accidents along the road directly as a continuous variable and explored the use of an additional technique according to Tobit regression. Unlike Previous studies, that have dealt with accident frequency; the current study shows the total accident rates directly as a continuous variable. The random and fixed parameters of Tobit model were evaluated to carry out an exhaustive study of the traffic features like percentage of heavy vehicles(%HV), Free Flow Speed (FFS) and logarithm of Annual Average Daily Flow (AADF) that influence the total accident rates. Data on total accident rates and traffic characteristics were gathered from 2016–2020 along Al- Fallujah – Al-Qaim rural road in Al-Anbar province, Iraq. This road has been segmented into 345 homogenous roadway segments. The obtained results show that the (RPTM) was able to find a better statistical compatibility also and offer comprehensive insights into the traffic characteristics that contribute to total accident rates than the fixed parameters Tobit model. Based on the random parameters model, also the results exhibit an increase in the traffic characteristics under study, namely the logarithm of average flow, the (%HV), and (FFS). consequently, contributed to the rise in the total accident rates.
